Mark Anthony King / Paintings / The Tree Series
Trees are rooted in symbolism. Within my canvas they can be protective symbols of strength and wisdom or joyous and celebratory. Some stand for loneliness, others for making connections. They may also appear ominous, threatening or melancholy, warning us that our youthful innocence has but a limited engagement. Yet they are playfully reminding us that we should remember to visit those places every now and again. Trees are curious by nature. They’re always reaching out for something. What I’m doing in my work is exploring the visual philosophy of nature, human nature. As a child I would always see trees as having different personalities. It felt as though each had something to say. Is there a message?
To me, personally, it’s merely a provocation of childlike wonder.
Other symbolisms you’ll find in my paintings are hillsides and swings. Hills, for me, are a symbol of anticipation. As we climb a hill are we not anxious as to what lies on the other side? Again I’m attempting to engage your sense of conjecture. All possibilities are right there, just on the other side of that hill. Climb with me and tell me what you see. Swings are a place where I used to go as a child and lose myself in daydreams. As to the figures on the swing, they are generally ambiguous. Nondescript; male or female – you decide. It’s a painting; it doesn’t have hang ups on gender, or sexual orientation. They are representative of anyone who wishes to hang from a swing on a tree high above the world and ponder the imponderables. It’s a place that can bring you answers or raise new questions. It can be relaxing or exciting.
It can be whatever you want it to be…I have my views. The real question is where does it take you?
